Safety tips

GMRT welcomes visitors to the Peak District and hopes people have a safe and enjoyable time in this beautiful National Park.

We hope you do not need to call for our help and that the following tips may prove useful.

In an emergency dial 999 and ask for the Police, then ask the Police for Mountain Rescue. Be sure to state early on in your call where you are as best you can. Some mobile phone calls may be routed according to your phone signal to a different Police force than the one that covers the area you are actually in.

If you are not an experienced hill walker there are lots of groups and courses available where you can gain some experience, meet like minded individuals and learn from qualified instructors. The British Mountaineering Council can help you.

As experienced hill walkers will tell you, it's always best to keep an eye on the weather and pack for the worst. It's not unusual in the Peak District to have to swap shorts for over trousers and sunglasses for snow goggles on the same walk!

Take a map, compass, torch, whistle, waterproofs, hat, gloves, warm clothes, food and drink with you. Have your mobile phone charged up if you have one and let someone know where you plan to go and when you plan to be back.

Have fun and enjoy your time in the Peak District.
